Do you have some materials or links to materials that describe what Chubays did so good for RAO and in his previous roles? I like your posts a lot, and you seem very positive about the guy. I would love to change my opinion about him.

Well. First, let’s be honest. I’m not here to change anyone’s view on anything. I’m here posting my subjective views and thoughts. All I post is totally subjective, and my thoughts may have supporters as well as opponents. From experience, I also know that it’s very difficult to change perceptions which were formed years or decades ago. People are rational creatures, so for every argument they will find a counter argument just to prove that they couldn’t have been wrong all this time.

Second, my perception of Chubais was formed not through readings (though yes I’m interested in history so read quite a few things), but rather through my experience while I worked for him in RAO UES as foreign media relations advisor. If you want, however, I can advise to read this book I was writing about in one of my posts. I think it’s a pretty honest coverage of how the reform of the Russian energy systems was going on and it also tells about what exactly Chubais did bring to the company as compared to his predecessors as well as opponents.

As to my personal opinion of what Chubais did, here’s what I think:

a) He managed the most controversial and the most crucial process in the history of modern Russia – privatization. It was painful, it was not without mistakes, but exactly this process made possible transition from socialism to capitalism in Russia. Yes, it created a bunch of very rich individuals, but so it did create middle class professionals. Nobody in Gaidar’s government wanted to take this responsibility. Chubais did, though even before he undertook the job, he understood that he would become a forever scapegoat in the eyes of the nation’s population. Chubais never said the results were perfect, on the contrary he was strong enough to admit the mistakes. And he never profited from privatization, as some of his opponents argue.

b) He was the most wise minister in the then cabinet, responsible for many important decisions.

c) Again, what he and his team did with RAO UES is amazing. From an inefficient monstrous company he managed to create one of the most efficient companies in Russia. The scale and the scope of this reform was so huge that there’s actually no way to compare it to any other company whatsoever in the world. The results of course are still to be seen, but many of them are already there.

Hope it explains why I think the way I think. If you decide to respond, please unveil yourself as I don’t feel comfortable responding to anonymous users.

well, I followed RAO's reform and restructuring for over 4 years as an investment analyst. While this reform was one of the most comprehensive and complicated reforms, it was implemented very thoughtfully/successfully.

Chubais was the major driving force behind the whole thing as he constantly lobbied the government for the need to reform even after everyone gave up on it.
